- Summary:
- Dr. Sandra C. Paivio uses emotion-focused therapy with a female client in her early twenties who is experiencing low self-esteem, difficulty trusting others, and eating concerns as a result of childhood experiences of emotional abuse from her mother and the absence of her father. The client is struggling with whether or not she wants to maintain a relationship with her mother. Dr. Paivio uses the empty chair technique to encourage the client to process her internal conflicts and her emotions toward her mother. The therapist uses mindfulness/grounding techniques to help the client stay engaged with her emotions when she becomes overwhelmed. At the end of session, the client summarizes how she is feeling and what she learned from the session
