Summary:
"Dr. Ellen A. Dornelas demonstrates cognitive behavioral therapy with an African American female client recently diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. The session begins with Dr. Dornelas asking the client about her experiences throughout her diagnosis and treatment. The client discusses the personal shock that came as a result of the diagnosis, and her reliance on her religious faith and social support to help her cope with the months that followed. Dr. Dornelas helps the client identify several of her strengths in managing her mood and emotions, and they discuss the client's goals (e.g., improved diet) for reducing the risk of a cancer reoccurrence. They also explore some of the challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis, including having to "put life on hold", the emotional reactions of family members, and talking to other individuals with more advanced cancer. Throughout the session, Dr. Dornelas challenges the client to make contact with some of the more difficult emotions as the client tries to dismiss them or push them away"
