Summary:
Dr. Barry L. Duncan demonstrates client directed, outcome informed (CDOI) clinical services with a middle-aged man who was recently laid off from his job and is now wrestling with the prospect of loss of income. The client discusses his anxiety at his uncertain future, as well as his tendency to turn to alcohol as a coping mechanism. The client reveals early in the session that he is reframing this lay-off as an opportunity. Duncan praises the client's strengths, helps the client identify ways to structure his time out of work, ascertains the client's commitment to adhering to his proposed activity schedule, troubleshoots possible roadblocks, and finally brainstorms alternative activities. Duncan also encourages the client to identify his support network and strengthen connections by planning to see family and friends more often while he is laid off. Duncan solicits client feedback at the beginning of the session, which he uses to guide the therapy. He again asks the client to complete a form at the end of the session that he uses to evaluate the session, and he solicits verbal feedback on the quality of the therapy
