Summary:
Clinical psychologist Dr. Ronald D. Siegel conducts a mindfulness meditation intervention with a white woman in her mid-20s who experiences frequent symptoms of anxiety. During the first part of the session, Dr. Siegel interviews the client in an empathic, open-ended manner to understand the nature and history of her anxiety, during which the client describes a history of early separation anxiety and school phobia. She further notes ongoing anxiety around seasonal shifts in mood and social anxiety concerns related to being evaluated by others. The therapist inquires about the triggers for the client's symptoms, the physiological sensations she experiences in anxious states, and the thoughts associated with these sensations. Dr. Siegel seeks to understand the client's ways of coping and observes that they have tended to take the form of avoidance and efforts to seek reassurance from external sources, whether through self-medication or desperate calls for help to family and friends. Using psychoeducational approaches and a meditative exercise within the session, Dr. Siegel introduces the client to an alternative way of coping with her anxiety that involves releasing efforts to control the anxiety and instead promotes mindful observation and acceptance of her emotional experience. When the client finds certain inner experiences unnerving in the exercise, the therapist suggests modifications while maintaining encouragement for her to find courage to handle her anxiety in more introspective ways
