- Summary:
- Counselor Dr. Mark Savickas conducts the second of three sessions with a young male adult client who has left one college at which he was underachieving and is seeking clarification on his academic and career goals. In this session, the therapist uses a narrative technique to reflect back to the client meaningful themes that have influenced him along his path. In this constructivist process, the therapist observes the client's caring nature alongside a tendency to be self-disciplined. The client's acceptance of the therapist's view, with the attendant sense of being understood, furthers the alliance. The therapist encourages the client to open possibilities rather than remain constricted to a single school and program choice in the wake of a disappointing, deflating experience. Within this enhanced therapeutic alliance, the therapist makes an interpretation, noting that his departure from one school with a failed grade may well have left him immobilized for several months in a manner akin to an early experience. The therapist acknowledges the client's anxiety while expressing confidence that he can have a different experience
