Summary:
"In this session, psychologist Dr. Steven J. Sandage applies the REACH forgiveness model with an African American married couple. Each letter of the REACH model cues one step to reach emotional forgiveness of others: Recalling, Emotional reprocessing, giving an Altruistic gift of forgiveness, Commitment to the emotional forgiveness experience, and Holding onto the forgiveness when doubts occur. The couple presents with communication difficulties, financial issues, and a stressful family life, which has led to a loss of balance in their married life. They express the desire to be a more unified and intimate couple. First, Dr. Sandage listens to their individual perspectives and highlights their common understandings and experiences. He then processes the emotions associated with the couple's interactions and reactions to family stress and financial responsibilities. The couple shares that their faith and spirituality have been central to their endurance, and Dr. Sandage spends time gaining an understanding of this aspect of the couple's relationship. Finally, Dr. Sandage explains that each member of the couple has many needs and that focusing on appreciating each other, communicating their needs, and collaborating with each other will be helpful in the future"
