Summary:
"In this session, Dr. Donald F. Walker demonstrates spiritually oriented cognitive-behavior therapy for trauma with a college-aged white female client who was sexually assaulted by a male acquaintance. At the request of the client, Dr. Walker begins the session with a prayer, and then allows the client to discuss the assault. The client describes how, after leaving a party with a male acquaintance, she was driven to a secluded area where the acquaintance forced himself on her against her will. During discussion of the incident, Dr. Walker helps the client vocalize the thoughts and feelings that occurred before, during, and after the assault. They discuss the client's feelings of excitement early in the night, followed by feelings of fear, powerlessness, betrayal, and finally, anger toward her assailant. Dr. Walker and the client explore her feelings as they relate to her spirituality, as well as the option of pursuing legal action and the option of disclosing the assault to her parents. Throughout the session, Dr. Walker uses a warm approach to support the client in exploring her trauma, while empathically challenging her when she feels pulled to blame herself. The client asks to conclude the session with a relaxation exercise, and Dr. Walker guides her through a short breathing meditation and provides recommendations for transitioning into the next part of her day following the session. This demonstration features an actor portraying a client on the basis of a composite of case material"
