Summary:
Clinical psychologist Kirk J. Schneider conducts a single psychotherapy session with a young Caucasian male client, who presents with a sense of uncertainty about the direction of his life regarding his career and social interactions. Dr. Schneider works with the client from an existential-integrative approach to provide space for the client to bring forth his concerns around social anxiety and underlying intrapsychic conflict. While respecting the client's familiar intellectualizing mode of interacting and reflecting, the therapist uses pacing, tone of voice, and verbal invitation to help relieve the client's expectations and create space for him to open awareness to his bodily and deeper emotional experience. Furthering this expansion on a verbal level, the therapist poses broad questions about meaning in the client's life, which assists the client in reflecting on the ways in which he inhibits himself. The therapist counters the client's tendencies toward inhibition and inaction, vivifying and confronting his resistance by challenging him to commit to exploring, taking risks, and being more present with himself
