Summary:
"In this session, Dr. Lawrence Josephs uses an integrative approach in dealing with the secondary effects of parental mistrust and suspected infidelity. The client, a heterosexual Indian man, presents with feelings of anxiety and mistrust about dating and social relationships due to his father's suspected (but never proven) infidelity and, subsequently, his parents' conflictual and distrusting relationship. Dr. Josephs and the client discuss the client's experiences as a child who witnessed and occasionally intervened in his parents' conflicts. They then work to understand how these experiences shaped the client's current mistrust of relationships, touching on the client's desire for a modern relationship versus his parents' traditional relationship. Through this examination, the client learns that he has difficulty trusting others because his parents did not trust each other. Dr. Josephs and the client discuss social anxiety and the client's chronic worry about how people will see him. Dr. Josephs also provides suggestions for coping behavior and explains the importance of taking risks and being authentic in order to build deeper relationships going forward"
