Summary:
Edward P. Shafranske uses a psychodynamic approach to psychotherapy that incorporates clients' religious beliefs and spirituality into resolving conflicts. He emphasizes the importance of the therapeutic alliance and helps clients work through past experiences that have limited their ability to be authentic and make changes that can help them enjoy life more fully. Shafranske works with an African American female client who is recently divorced. She struggles with resentful feelings toward her ex-husband who was verbally and emotionally abusive to her when they were married and she was pregnant with their child. Shafranske works with her to understand her avoidance and resentment and the struggle she has between her religious beliefs around the importance of forgiveness and her struggle to forgive her husband. As she remembers past experiences in both her and her ex-husband's family, she becomes more empathic toward him and the possibility of forgiving him
