Summary:
Dr. Jeanne C. Watson conducts a single session of emotion-focused therapy with a 34-year-old Black woman who is overwhelmed by her commitments. Although she is beginning to learn certain self-care strategies, the client struggles to balance her roles of wife, mother, employee, volunteer, and student. The client expresses a wish to be less judgmental of herself, to trust her decisions, and to celebrate her own achievements. Together, they explore the client's underlying fear of not being liked, which influences the client to avoid conflict. Using a supportive approach, Dr. Watson helps the client acknowledge how tired she is from her many commitments. Dr. Watson utilizes an empty-chair technique to help the client explore the part of herself that pushes her to do more and the part of herself that is tired and overwhelmed. They explore the many messages the client gives herself about taking on commitments, and the client struggles to get in touch with her tired self, instead reinforcing the messages about the importance of her commitments. Eventually, Dr. Watson helps the client acknowledge that she values her obligations and that she also is tired and needs to employ more self-care strategies. They end the session by identifying the next step in the process--for the client to learn how to attend to her own needs throughout the day
