"As fate would have it, it was me, the girl who had never been inclined towards Zionist or national ideas before the war and had not even taken part in the activities of any youth movement in Munkács, who was following things in my footsteps. After I left Munkács, my hometown, behind me, and returned to Budapest, I joined the movement and paved the way for a new life for myself. I knew Hebrew from the Hebrew school in Munkács, and I even already had a Hebrew name - Yehudit. The name itself was given to me while I was still at school, I think it was the teacher Hanna who gave it to me, despite the fact that everyone in the family called me Vera and Veroshka. In the Young Guard I returned to my Hebrew name, Yehudit." This is how Yehudit describes her "rebirth." From Veruska, a young girl living in Munkács, Czechoslovakia, with her loving parents, Ivoja and Jacob Roth, and her younger brother Tommy (later Zvi), surrounded by other relatives, she lived a peaceful and comfortable life until the outbreak of World War II and the Holocaust. Then she was torn from her home, her friends and her family, from her younger brother and her father, whom she would never see again. Vera, who was sent to another planet, to Auschwitz in Poland, survived and became a Jew, a member of the Zionist youth movement, Hashomer Hatzair, who decides alone to immigrate to Israel with the members of her group and join Kibbutz Negva. Yehudit fights shoulder to shoulder with the other members in another war for existence, the War of Liberation. Only then does the stage of establishing a home, a family, and life together with all that entails come.
