"Yaakov Steinberg (1887-1947) was one of the unique and enigmatic poets of Hebrew poetry at the beginning of the 20th century. Scholars and critics, from Bialik to Natan Zach, have noted his laterness and marginality as his poetic hallmark, as the antithesis of Hebrew poetry to date. This marginality is often presented as a result of his character, poetic temperament, and the circumstances of his life. But what if what was defined as 'character' was actually an informed critique of the dominant Hebrew poetics, which the literary establishment refused to hear, and therefore defined as 'exceptional' and 'minor'? This book offers a new reading of Steinberg's place in the literary discourse of the revival generation, and presents his poetry as a fundamental critique of the basic assumptions of national poetry in Hebrew and Yiddish. Steinberg undermined the poetics that were 'recruited' to consolidate the national body through complex parody and an aesthetic that borrowed from Russian decadent poetry. But the mainstream in Hebrew culture and poetry saw his approach as an unusual and artistically inferior and psychologically unacceptable approach - and thus Steinberg was marginalized. A careful analysis of Steinberg's poetry in Hebrew and Yiddish sheds new light here on a tradition that has been almost completely forgotten by literary historiography: a modern Hebrew tradition that grappled with the basic assumptions of the authors of the revival generation, from a tense dialogue with Yiddish culture. Steinberg's poetry goes beyond the narrow national discourse and is situated within a broader context, where Yiddishism, Zionism and diasporic nationalism intersect.
