- Summary:
- Experience Japan's most celebrated anthology of poetry with this completely new translation of the Hyakunin Isshu ("A Hundred Poems by a Hundred Poets"). This timeless collection, compiled by the esteemed poet Fujiwara no Teika in the 13th century, features works by 100 poets from the 7th and 8th centuries and remains widely read across Japan to this day. These evocative poems provide a window into the daily life of ancient Japan, exploring universal themes such as love, loneliness, aging, and the beauty of nature--topics that continue to resonate with readers today.
- Notes:
- "The woodblock print illustrations in this book are from the series The Ogura Imitations of One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets (Ogura nazorae hyakunin isshu), by three of Japan's renowned nineteenth-century woodblock print artists: Utagawa Hiroshige, who created thirty-five of the prints; Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who created fifty-one of the prints; and Utagawa Kunisada, who created fourteen of them. The print series was made specially to illustrate this volume of poems, and the imagery in each print is based on scenes from Kabuki theater that relate to the theme of each poem."--Page 18, Introduction.
