- 全书以"变古"为轴心贯穿中国先秦法家思想史,有系统的纵论先秦法家思想的脉络,并据陈启天先生的主张以管仲,子产为法家思想的先驱.子产为了"吾以救世也",而铸公布法"刑书",开启了中国的法治制度.晋铸"刑鼎",接着各国纷纷实行程度不同的法治.至战国初期,更有魏李悝集诸国法典造"法经",魏文侯殁,商鞅至秦,吴起到楚分别实施变法,而兵强国富,唯遭封建贵族反扑,商鞅要车裂,吴起惨死.但商鞅虽死,其法未变,经数代经营而统一六国.由于公布法而产生罪名与罪刑相符应的"刑名"问题,故有郑邓析造"竹刑",当为先秦法家的旁支,本书亦将其列入.刘纲纪教授曾评本书为"法家思想研究的重要成果".
