- Summary:
- The free Hanseatic city of Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city. Dating back to 811, the city has flourished as a center of trade and commerce. Today, it boasts one of the busiest ports in the world. Devastated by fire bombings in World War II, the city has been rebuilt, with many traditional buildings faithfully restored. Hamburg is a green city with numerous parks and gardens. Fashionable suburbs have grown up around the famous Alster Lakes and canals. Because of its commercial strength, Hamburg has a sizeable expatriate community. Numerous industries include import and export businesses as well as publishing, broadcasting, and shipping. The city also has a vibrant nightlife and numerous cultural institutions. The city's northern location and history as a Hanseatic port give it an almost Scandinavian feel. This is reflected in its cuisine, its liberal traditions, and its inhabitants' dedication to hard work.
