Summary:
Enabled by the demise of the Ottoman Empire, after the First World War, Abdulaziz al-Saud, known as Ibn Saud, waged a long and arduous war to unite the disparate nomadic tribes from across the Arabian Peninsula. In 1932, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was born, with Ibn Saud its first king. In 1938, oil was discovered, creating the incredible wealth for which Saudi is famed. Since then, Saudi Arabia has grown into a wealthy and powerful country, a member of the G20, and a significant global influence, especially across the Arab and Islamic world. Yet Saudi remains a very conservative, closed, enigmatic, and controversial society. It is revered, reviled, and feared in equal measure. Its recent twentieth-century history is dominated by nation-building and state formation. Explore the country and its seismic economic, social, and cultural disruptions.
