Summary:
Indonesia's legal structure is based on the European civil-law system, an influence from Dutch colonialism. This is in contrast to common-law legal systems, such as in the US. The main difference is that in a common-law jurisprudence system, prior published judicial opinion - that is, case-law precedence - can be of great importance, whereas in a civil-law country, codified statues predominate. Learn more about the court system and the importance of the constitution and laws as well as presidential or ministerial decrees, which are sometimes promulgated in lieu of laws.
