Summary:
Germans rely very little on body language, although it is still an important part of communication. In general, they consider hand gestures unnecessary. They focus instead on communicating well verbally. Someone who expresses himself or herself eloquently commands a great deal of respect. By contrast, someone who makes extraneous gestures may be seen as lacking in language skills. Making eye contact, however, is very important. Germans consider it a sign of respect and candor. Avoiding someone's eyes may be taken as a sign of dishonesty or weakness. Explore more nuances of body language in German interactions.
