- Summary:
- Along with Pretoria, Johannesburg is a commercial and financial center located in the Gauteng province. With more than 7 million people, it's the largest city in South Africa. After gold was discovered in the area in 1886, immigrants rushed in from all over the world, and Johannesburg eventually became the mining, industrial, and financial heart of Africa. The city's excellent business infrastructure and physical location make it an ideal gateway to business communities throughout the continent. Also known as Egoli, or "The City of Gold," the city is both exciting and energetic, but many social and economic challenges remain, including skyrocketing crime and racial division.
