Summary:
Germany guarantees its people the freedom to practice the religion of their choice; there is no state religion. Protestant and Catholic churches have enjoyed equal status in Germany for centuries. The Peace of Augsburg in 1555 recognized the right of the Lutheran Church to exist and gave rulers the right to decide which religion to adopt in their principalities. The north became predominantly Protestant, while the south remained mostly Catholic. This pattern remains much the same today. Since there's no state church, churches are run as independent public corporations. The church plays an important role in Germany's welfare and social services system. It also retains an active voice in debates over heated social issues. In large part because of the influx of immigrants and guest workers in the postwar years, Germany has a significant Muslim population. Learn more about the major religions in Germany and the impact on local society.
