- Summary:
- Indonesian women have equal rights with men by law, and increasingly, by custom. The right to vote was granted to women in Indonesia's constitution. Property and inheritance rights are adjudicated equally in government courts, but families can also choose state-run Islamic courts for probate. Here decisions are usually driven by Islamic patriarchal conventions. Traditionally, the place of women in the social hierarchy has been below men, especially in rural areas. In these areas, women have been serving as the primary rice-planters and water-carriers in addition to performing household and child-rearing duties. Mechanization, however, is causing these roles to shift. In cities, dramatic change has occurred in the past two decades. Since the late 1980s, many young women have left their rural towns and villages to work in Jakarta and Bandung factories. Housed together in dormitories, they send needed funds to their families but also gain a sense of freedom and possibility. Explore how the role of women in society is evolving.
