- Summary:
- Everything has its time and place -- so the saying goes. In keeping with this expression, Germans expect a certain level of formality in public settings, while private gatherings tend to be far less formal. Germans are big on shaking hands. Forms of address are equally formal between Germans when they first meet. They'd never address someone by his or her first name. Rather, they'd use a title such as Herr or Frau in front of the last name. Germans typically take time to establish mutual trust in a relationship before developing an informal rapport. In contrast to their formal behavior in public, Germans are refreshingly informal in private, even fun-loving and cheerful. Explore customs that continue to be the foundation of German society.
