- Summary:
- Many people in Indonesia believe in the spiritual power behind objects and forces, and most societies have organized ceremonies and rituals to mollify these spirits. In Indonesia, traditional animist beliefs have been combined with the scripture-based systems brought by traders and wandering teachers - Buddhism and Hinduism from India, Islam from the Middle East, Christianity from Europe, and Confucianism from China. These new ideas have been blended into a subtle harmony that is religion in Indonesia today. Since religion did not enter Indonesia by force, each new cosmological wave added a layer to what had already come before. Explore historical influences that have impacted the role of religion in Indonesian society today. Atheism is frowned upon and can cause social stigma. Recently, there has been a shift toward Islamic fundamentalism, as some people feel threatened and ambivalent about modernization. Most offices and buildings are required to have a prayer room. Despite this recent shift, most Indonesians are not very orthodox in their beliefs, and the debate over the role of Islam in Indonesia's politics and society continues today.
