Summary:
France's per capita gross domestic product might be lower than that of the US by more than a third, but the state provides significant subsidies for education, health care, transportation, and childcare. French salaries are higher than in the UK, though lower than in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan. The gap between rich and poor is wider in France than in other European nations, but welfare and taxes narrow that gap considerably. Still, class hostilities between the working class and the noveau riche are pronounced. Find out more about this dynamic and about French attitudes toward wealth.
