- Summary:
- Indonesia, a member of the G20, has the sixteenth-largest economy in the world and the largest in Southeast Asia. The economy has been transformed since the country's independence in 1945. Indonesia has a market capitalist economy with a large state-owned sector. Principles of socialism and social welfare are embedded in the constitution and strongly influence the government's economic policies, leading to overregulation of the private sector. Free trade is often associated with the mercantilism of the Dutch colonial era and can sometimes be viewed with skepticism. Corruption remains a widespread problem, impacting the country's economic development and affecting local governments, the police, and private sectors. Corruption is the most problematic issue when it comes to doing business in Indonesia, in addition to inefficient government bureaucracy and inconsistent policy-making.
