- Summary:
- Regarded as one of Germany's most traditional cities, Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is suffused with traditions, attitudes, and values foreigners usually associate with Germany. It is also one of Germany's most prosperous cities. Originally a settlement of Benedictine monks around the eighth century, Munich was a major European cultural and economic center by the nineteenth century. Explore the city's history and transformation into a modern city. Today, Munich is known for its Biergarten Beer Gardens, where people congregate during summer to socialize and drink. Oktoberfest, perhaps the city's most well-known festival, is held in the fall. The city also has one of Europe's largest open food markets and numerous shops and boutiques. Munich is often regarded as one of Germany's most desirable cities. Its location in the heart of Bavaria is very attractive, and it's a gateway to the south, including Austria and the scenic Alpine areas.
