Summary:
Because Japan is such a long chain of islands from north to south, the climate is different from region to region. Kyushu is hotter in the summer than Tokyo, for instance, but also warmer in the winter. Farther south, Kochi prefecture, on the island of Shikoku, has warm, rainy weather all year-round, as well as frequent strong typhoons. Okinawa - known for its beaches with white star-shaped sand and clear blue sea - has a subtropical climate. Most of the country is temperate, however, and although each season may not be as defined as some Japanese want you to believe, each does have distinct characteristics. The Japanese still celebrate the passing of time, which may be why, to them, each season seems so special.
