- Summary:
- Saudi Arabia is a relatively young country, less than a century old. Learn about the political-religious alliance formed in the eighteenth century that provided the framework for Saudi expansion and remains the basis of its dynastic rule. In 1932, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was born, with Ibn Saud its first king. In 1938, oil was discovered, creating the incredible wealth for which Saudi Arabia is now famed, although income inequality remains widespread. Today, Saudi Arabia is a member of the G20 and enjoys a significant geopolitical role - it has the world's second-largest oil reserves and is the largest oil exporter. Despite the political, economic, and cultural forces that are changing the nation's mindset, three key characteristics continue to define the nation. First, Saudi is the crucible of Islam, and no other nation shares its unique sacred heritage. Second, Saudi is one of the few countries in the world that is named after its ruling family, which controls all the power. Third, Saudi is experiencing massive change as it pursues a national development strategy called Vision 2030, which describes ambitious plans for economic and societal transformation.
