Summary:
South Africa's diverse ethnic makeup is a defining feature of the country. Though more than three-quarters of the population are of African descent, this group is extremely varied culturally and linguistically. Zulus make up the largest ethnic group, and 23 percent of South Africans speak Zulu as their primary language. About 11 percent of the population is European in origin, of which 60 percent is Afrikaner and the other 40 percent are British or from other parts of Europe. About 10 percent are of mixed race called coloreds. The Indian community represents more than 1 percent of the population and lives mainly in the KwaZulu-Natal and in urban townships and older cities. Explore the complex dynamics between the rural and urban as well as the diverse ethnic groups, which have been a defining part of South Africa's history, society, and culture.
