Armorial bookplate of a member of the Grant family (arms: gules, a chevron engrailed ermine between three antique crowns or; crest: Roman fasces; motto: Leges juraque serva), probably Colonel Francis Richard Charles Grant (1834-1899) on front pastedown with partially illegible manuscript note ("Col. Grant's copy, [...] his note") in pencil above and manuscript note ("Hill's (Sir John) [arrow pointing upward]") in pencil below. Illustrated bookplate ("EX LIBRIS A. EDWARD NEWTON OAK KNOLL") of A. Edward Newton tipped onto front pastedown. Paper sheet with dated 19th-century manuscript anecdote regarding Sir John Hill (signed at end: "F. Grant 25 July. 1894."), probably in the hand of Francis Richard Charles Grant tipped onto front free endpaper. Partially illegible autograph ("M. Grant [...] [...]") at head of title leaf.
