- Summary:
- This work presents a history of old age in Brazil from the colonial period to modern times, exploring how the experience of aging has transformed over the centuries. The author examines how the elderly were perceived and how they lived in different historical periods, from the early days of colonization, through the Empire, the Old Republic, and into the present day. The research uses sources such as Jesuit chronicles, travelers' accounts, memoirs, correspondence, newspapers, literature, paintings, and photographs to reconstruct the experience of old age in the past. The work analyzes topics such as gender differences in aging, the condition of elderly slaves, the role of widows and spinsters, the relationship between old age and poverty, the development of geriatrics, and the transformation of the "old" into the "elderly." The book offers a historical perspective on how old age went from being a fatality to being seen as a privilege, exploring social and cultural representations of aging in different historical contexts in Brazil.
