Horse racing. American champion 'Zev' ridden by Earle Sande beats the Derby winner 'Papyrus' ridden by Steve Donoghue at Belmont Park, USA. Film supplied by Kinograms (81ft). Note: The Zev-Papyrus race was one of the most notorious events in American newsreel history, with the Fox and Hearst companies attempting to pirate the event to which Pathe had bought the rights. Smoke screens were set up and large mirrors used to reflect sunlight into the lenses of rival cameramen. See Raymond Fielding's 'The American Newsreel 1911-1967', pp 140-141.
