- Summary:
- "Description: In 1972, after my former husband said he wasn't up for the move, I relocated to SoHo with my, then, two young sons. Like other of the neighborhood pioneers we renovated a 3000 square foot dusty factory floor into a shiny new live/work loft. The old five-story building had oversize police-lock doors which didn't make you feel safer, a huge freight elevator and a single cold staircase with faded industrial green walls illuminated by a dangling light bulb. Loft parties were attended by those you invited-art dealers, artists, collectors, critics and neighbors-and those who heard the noise from the street and came on up. Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Janis Joplin blasted their songs of knowledge and regret over loud speakers suspended from twelve-foot ceilings. Rival groups- earthwork artists, pop artists, conceptual artists, and color field painters-were all at Max's Kansas City most nights. One time a huge fight broke out which appears in chapter 9, "Dirt, Stones, Bricks, Smashed Mirrors." There are visits with Lee Krasner at her East Hampton home on Springs Fireplace Road, and then in Manhattan, a long friendship with the art critic, Clement Greenberg, who appears throughout the book. Plus, SoHo itself-who was there; who they were, and how they ended up. Paris in the 20's was a magical time, something that couldn't be repeated but which Hemingway captured in his posthumous "A Moveable Feast," a collection of stories about the artist's life in France. Everyone agrees that life in SoHo in the 70's and 80's was also a magical time. And this book means to be a record of that wonderful era in the same way that "A Movable Feast" was"-- Provided by publisher.
