- Summary:
- We draw out two primary elements of Hymer’s theory of foreign direct investment (FDI). First, it differentiates Hymer’s theory of foreign (direct) investment from the prevailing paradigm of foreign (portfolio) investment. Hymer underscored the shift from competitive to monopolistic industrial structures in metropolitan economies as the basis of international relocation of production or FDI. Second, the “Theory” section of this entry traces out the socioeconomic impact of inward FDI on developing countries. Hymer had surmised that the impact of FDI on peripheral economies could be fraught and inequitable. The “Theory in Practice” section surveys contemporary scholarship on FDI and multinational corporations, and in so doing implicitly critically appraises Hymer’s theory.
