- Summary:
- Authentic leadership is a leadership theory that describes leaders as focusing on trust and building relationships. The theory has five dimensions/characteristics that inspire the leader and their followers. These dimensions can be inherent or developed. Although the theory became widely popular in the early 2000s, criticism of authentic leadership suggests that it is not viable in today’s workplace environment. This criticism has resulted in three new perspectives of the theory: developmental, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. The recent broadening of the theory also addresses diversity and inclusion in the workplace and the many ways leaders can build trust in the workplace. The world of sports provides many examples of authentic leadership and the skills authentic leaders value. Current business leaders also provide insights regarding how authentic leadership can foster greater job satisfaction, collaboration, and productivity for the leader and their employees.
