Summary:
Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions is a theoretical framework analyzing the relative differences between national cultures using six dimensions of cultural values. These dimensions are (a) power distance dimension, (b) uncertainty avoidance dimension, (c) individualism dimension, (d) masculinity dimension, (e) time orientation dimension, and (e) indulgence dimension. Each dimension relates to and describes patterns of more specific values, beliefs, ideas, and actions within a culture. Ultimately, applying Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions creates a better understanding of how and why cultures may function differently and, thus, increases cultural competency.
