Notes:
The documents titled Silsile-i Ulemâ provide crucial informa- tion about the careers of members of the Ottoman ilmiye (scholar) organization. This work, first introduced to the aca- demic world by İsmail Hakkı Uzunçarşılı in 1965, is a unique source with its sole copy located in the Süleymâniye Library. However, a comprehensive study has not been conducted to understand the complex structure and content of the work. In this examination attempt, after determining the name and type of the codex, its content has been analytically presented. The documents list the Shaykh al-Islam, kazaskers, kadiships, mudarrisships, and madrasas in chronological order. Moreover, it is significant in terms of reflecting the insider perspectives of the Ottoman ulama towards their colleagues. The views, criticisms, and descriptions of the ulama towards each other can be very explicit, and sometimes even insulting and hurtful. As a result of the investigations, it has been determined that the documents contain information about more than 3,000 Ottoman scholars. By compiling the scattered information into a single record and comparing it with the main sources, these records will form the basis of the Ottoman ulama regis- try with a comprehensive study to be conducted in the future.
