Notes:
Evidence in the drawing title blocks, and from the Biographical dictionary of Philadelphia architects (1985) suggests the following history of architectural affiliations. Addison Hutton served as office assistant & draftsman to the noted Samuel Sloan ca. 1857-1961. Hutton received his first known independent commission in 1862. He joined as partner with Sloan ca. 1864-1868. In 1868 the partnership was dissolved, and Hutton won the commission for the PSFS building at Walnut & 7th St., Philadelphia. Hutton is believed to have practiced primarily on his own until 1904, with occasional affiliations documented on the drawings with R.G. Kennedy, ca. 1875, with John Ord ca. 1876, and with Charles L. Hillman & James Shirk, ca. 1892 & 1893.
The Biographical dictionary states that Addison Hutton's nephews, Albert Henry Savery & Addison Hutton Savery began working for him ca. 1890. Also, ca. 1892 William Cramp Scheetz, Sr. began working for Hutton. Drawing title block evidence shows Albert Savery & William Scheetz practiced together as Savery & Scheetz, ca. 1899-1909. But, around 1904, according to the Biographical dictionary, Hutton partnered with the new firm of (Albert) Savery, Scheetz & (Addison) Savery, until Huttons semi-retirement in 1907, and full retirement 1910. Drawing title blocks show Savery, Scheetz & Savery contining ca. 1907 to 1916, with a return to Savery & Scheetz as early as 1913 to 1936. The successor firm of Savery, Scheetz & Gilmore is shown on drawings, ca. 1937 to 1955. The Biographical dictionary suggests that the Savery, Scheetz & Savery affiliation continued after the death of Hutton in 1916, and of Addison Savery in 1931 till ca. 1934, when the association with Gilmore was formed. Albert Savery died in 1939, but may not have been an active member of this later firm. William Cramp Scheetz, Jr. joined Scheetz & Gilmore in 1940.
This collection is largely unprocessed.
