LIBRA Rare PR3551.G5 1894 copies 1 & 2 presented to the Penn Libraries by Joseph A. Wittreich in honor of Stuart A. Curran, 2021. Copies have only frontispiece illustration "The Temptation" consisting of portrait of Milton in the upper half and the temptation of Eve by the snake in the lower half with an angel carrying a sword on the right side. Copy 1 has dark green boards with a portrait of Milton and his signature in blind on front cover; spine lettered in gilt. The contents page is at the back with [2] pages of publisher's advertisements. Copy 2 has marbled paper covered boards with green leatherette spine rules and stamped in gilt with title "Milton and leatherette covered corners. The contents page precedes the text and there are no publisher's advertisements.

Paper edition featuring a cover portrait of Milton as he appears in the frontispiece and an advertisement for the silent sewing machine on the back. Contents page is at back with [2] pages of publisher's advertisements and [3] pages of "Observations on Indigestion". numerous advertisements and [4] uncut leaves in the Translations section.

Oval blue ink stamp ("JOHN JONES BOOKSELLER ABERAYRON") on verso of frontispiece portrait. Manuscript date ("ca. 1865") on title leaf.
