Summary:
"Carollee Bengelsdorf's Clandestinas unearths the important role that women played in urban insurrections during the Cuban Revolution. Interrupting narratives of a male-centered revolution and national identity, Bengelsdorf offers an alternative reading of women's revolutionary history in Cuba, repositioning them as active subjects in the overthrow of the Batista regime and, by extension, protagonists and transgressors in the creation of the national mythos. Through several years of fieldwork and extended interviews with former clandestinas, Bengelsdorf unpacks questions of memory, national identity, and revolution, such as challenging the notion that the revolution was only made possible in the country-side. Bengelsdorf's narrative will be accompanied by a visual essay with photographs by Susan Meiselas"-- Provided by publisher.
