Summary:
"This volume offers a critical edition and translation of one of Richard Rolle's final Latin writings, together with an extensive historical introduction, notes, and commentary. Rolle turns the nine passages from Job read in Matins in the Office of the Dead into a psycho-drama in which readers are faced with death, decay, and the fate of their soul, and are exhorted to take up the work of penance and contemplation. This work's influence on the educated English clergy in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries made it a major contributor to Christian attitudes toward death and dying in the later medieval English Church."-- Provided by publisher.
