Summary:
The Interim Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [1] provides asbestos measurements that can be related directly to risk. Results from a pilot study indicate that target sensitivities of 5 x 107 total asb s/g and 3 x 106 long asb s/g are easily achievable using the method and this more than covers the range of interest. Results also indicate that the precision of the method is adequate to distinguish differences in concentrations required for supporting risk management decisions. Relative percent differences (RPD's) of 50% across split samples should be routinely achievable using the method. A controlled field study also confirms that source concentrations that are measured using the Superfund Method, which can be reported for any structure size range of interest, can be coupled directly to appropriate emission and dispersion models to accurately predict airborne exposure concentrations. Adjustable parameters (id est fudge factors) are not required
