Summary:
"The years between the two World Wars were critical years in the history of Jamaica and its capital city, Kingston. During these years, the systemic inequities and vulnerabilities of the colonial Jamaican economy were especially magnified in the continuum of living conditions, urban fabric and economy of the city. It is during this period that the working class strikes and demonstrations drew attention to the urgent need for reform, and it is at the end of this era that the decolonization process gained traction. Shacks, Slums and Suburbs, as the title suggests, is particularly concerned with the social fabric, building typologies and living conditions of the entire spectrum of Kingston's inhabitants from the urban poor to the middle and upper classes, featuring never before published architectural reconstruction drawings of both suburban and slum housing. This investigation is set within a broader understanding of the city's history and characteristics" -- Back cover.
