Archival caption: On 16 March 1976, Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson (1916 - 1995) announces his resignation as Prime Minister (taking effect on 5 April 1976). He claims that he had always planned on resigning at the age of 60, and that he is physically and mentally exhausted. Our Picture Shows: Barbara Castle Secretary of State for Health and Social Services leaving 10 Downing Street after Wilson had disclosed to his cabinet colleagues his intention to step down from the office of Prime Minister.
