Lady Diana prefers a chic frill at the neck, while the New Romantics (followers of Adam Ant and Spandau Ballet) opt for lace jabots, mufflers and ruffles. And the Paris mandarins use lace in their latest evening gowns with outrageous extravagance. But lace can come cheaper than the Left Bank if you shop around, and of course there are always the second-hand clothes from two generations ago to be found in jumble sales. It's pretty, fashionable and suits either sex because you can stick it or sew it on more or less anything. White and woolly.... Dress £30 from M.O. Designs. Blouse £15.
