- Archival caption: Iran hostage crisis November 4th 1979 - 20th January 1981. On the 4th November 1979 a group of Iranian college students belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line, who supported the Iranian Revolution, took over the US. Embassy, Tehran. The students were demanding the return of the Shah who had fled the country to the USA following the take over by Ayatollah Khomeini and his supporters. The crisis would last for 444 days and stands as the longest hostage crisis in recorded history Our Picture Shows: A street food vendor feeding the demonstrators outside the US Embassy.
