Archival caption: The senes at Cathedral Square at the end of the march. 8000 people joined the march for racial harmony in Coventry but it ended with 74 arrests. Some 200 groups came to join the protest against racial prejudice and violence in Coventry - triggered by the murder of 20-year-old Satnam Singh Gill a few weeks earlier in Coventry shopping precinct. The mile-long procession was good-humoured as it threaded its way into the city centre from Edgwick Park, Foleshill. There were noisy chants and drums but no clashes. The trouble began as they approached Broadgate and large numbers of skinheads who lined the route began to throw missiles at the marchers. They gave Nazi-style salutes and chanted "Sieg Heil." When the rally reached Cathedral Square mounted police were sent into the crowd who retaliated with rocks, sticks and bottles. 11 police officers received minor injuries. 23rd May 1981.
