Summary:
Archival caption: Frightened spectators had to run for cover when violence erupted as Coventry's carnival procession passed through the city. A total of 72 people were arrested on Saturday - more than on the last two carnival days put together. Those arrested will appear before Coventry magistrates tomorrow on charges including assaulting police officers, assault, drink charges and offences under the Public Order Act. The trouble in Broadgate and the Precinct was in stark contrast to the festivities at the Memorial Park where ony 5 arrersts took place throughout the day. Crowds of skinheads and West Indian youths had gathered in the Precinct. As the police moved in among the West Indian group a disturbance was triggered. The opposing group of skinheads then ran at the West Indians shouting "Sieg Heil." 13th June 1981.
