Summary:
Ethnic minority groups in Canada have set up their owncommunication infrastructure that has evolved over time from theanalog to the digital age, and continues to remain relevant acrossgenerations. Offering a reassessment of contemporary media outlets,The Handbook of Ethnic Media in Canada asks how ethnicmedia have changed, why they continue to be relevant, and whatimpact this media sector has on ethnocultural communities as wellas broader society.

Building on past studies that highlight particular functions ofethnic media - publishing information that is vital to settlementand civic engagement and providing an alternative to mainstreammedia, among others - this volume generates insights on newdynamics of the ethnic media sector that are prevalent in thedigital age. Contributors re-examine theoretical and methodologicalapproaches to ethnic media research, explore the practices ofethnic media along cultural, linguistic, and religious lines, andinterrogate the policies that affect ethnic media production andconsumption. At its core, the question of how Canadians engage withethnic media is a question about what this media sector means forthe sociocultural, economic, and political integration ofCanadians, both majority and minority, and Canada's racerelations.

The Handbook of Ethnic Media in Canada provides a richresource for anyone concerned about the role media plays in thecomplex relationship between ethnicity, race, belonging, andmarginality.
